First Pepper Seeds

Last year the pepper plants were slow to start producing. I believe that there are two reasons for this. One, I planted them too closely with tomatoes and they did not receive enough sunlight. Two, They were smallish when they went into the ground.


To address these two issues, I plan to plant all peppers in a single bed with nothing else. I also am starting seeds earlier. Like TODAY!!

In two of each cup I planted five seeds of the following:

• California Wonder
• Yellow Bell
• Green Bell
• Sweet Banana
• Italian Peppers-something I picked up at a farmer's market and really liked-prolific and delicious

New Year's Garden Resolutions

• Garden at least 30 minutes six days a week
• Post at least three times per week
• Buy no plants-grow entire garden from seed

Today I cleared Bed # 3. Found some small potatoes and small onions as I turned the soil. Spread some compost from the compost heap and worked in some fertilizer. Planted a bit of Swiss Chard, some Touchon carrots, and Bloomsdale Long Standing and Giant Noble spinach.

I sprinkled on the seed and then topped it with a bit of sawdust. After that I tamped the soil down with a board, watered the seeds in and the covered the carrot area with the board. I am going to see if the seeds will sprout better in this August heat if they are WELL covered. The rest of the bed got a sprinkling of straw.
